USA Boxing athlete guide

BECOME A
BOXER.

Registering is only the first step. Learn what you need to join USA Boxing, receive your passbook, train safely and become ready for sanctioned amateur competition.

Six clear steps

FROM FIRST DAY
TO FIRST BOUT.

USA Boxing athlete membership allows eligible boxers to train, spar and compete within the sanctioned system. Your coach—not the registration receipt—determines when you are technically, physically and mentally prepared to compete.

01

Join a Registered Club

Train at a USA Boxing registered club with currently certified coaches. Tell the coach that your goal is amateur competition and ask what the team expects.

02

Create or Renew Membership

Use the official USA Boxing registration system and select the correct athlete category. Standard athlete membership is available from age 8 through 40; athletes over 40 register as Masters.

03

Verify Age & Citizenship

USA Boxing requires proof of age and citizenship, normally a certified birth certificate or the passport page showing your photo and vital information.

04

Complete Your Physical

Have a qualified medical provider complete the current USA Boxing annual physical form. Masters athletes have additional medical forms and testing requirements.

05

Get Your Passbook

Follow the instructions from your Local Boxing Committee for your competition passbook. Keep it current and bring it to every sanctioned weigh-in and event.

06

Earn Your First Match

Build fundamentals, conditioning and controlled sparring experience. Your coach will evaluate readiness, look for an appropriate match and guide you through event registration.

Important: Do not arrange your own bout. Matching should go through your qualified coach and the sanctioned event process. Opponents are considered by age, weight, experience and other competition rules.

Boxer questions

KNOW BEFORE
YOU REGISTER.

Does registering mean I can fight immediately?

No. Registration makes you a member. Your coach must still determine that you are ready and find a suitable sanctioned match.

Can a complete beginner become an amateur boxer?

Yes. Start with fundamentals and consistent training. There is no responsible shortcut to competition readiness.

What if I am over 40?

USA Boxing directs athletes over 40 into Masters membership and requires additional medical documentation. Review the current Masters forms before registering.

Can Old School help me register?

Yes. Our coaches can explain the process and help active team members understand the documents and local steps, but USA Boxing and the Arizona LBC control membership and eligibility.

Requirements can change. Confirm current details with USA Boxing Membership before submitting.
