USA Boxing coach guide

BECOME A
COACH.

Certification creates the minimum credential. Great coaching also requires responsibility, communication, technical knowledge and years of learning inside the gym.

Six clear steps

FROM CORNER HELP
TO CERTIFIED COACH.

USA Boxing coaches must maintain current non-athlete membership and complete required safety, screening and education components. Complete every item shown as outstanding in your USA Boxing profile.

01

Register Each Calendar Year

Create or renew your USA Boxing membership and select the appropriate non-athlete coaching role. Membership must remain current to participate in sanctioned activities.

02

Pass Background Screening

Submit the screening through the provider linked in your USA Boxing account. Your coaching status is not complete until the screening is cleared.

03

Complete SafeSport

Take the required U.S. Center for SafeSport course and keep the certification current. The training covers athlete safety, misconduct prevention and reporting responsibilities.

04

Earn Green Level

Complete USA Boxing’s entry-level Green coaching certification online. It covers coaching fundamentals, boxer development, technical skills and gym safety.

05

Get Your Coach Passbook

Follow USA Boxing and Local Boxing Committee instructions for the red coach passbook, including the requested confirmation and photos. Bring it to sanctioned events.

06

Learn Under Experience

Work beside established coaches. Learn warm-ups, skill progressions, sparring supervision, corner procedure, matching, event registration and athlete communication.

Certification is the floor—not the finish line. A new coach should not rush into managing sparring or cornering athletes alone. Build judgment under an experienced coaching team.

Coaching questions

BE READY FOR
THE RESPONSIBILITY.

Can I coach after only buying the membership?

No. A coaching membership must be paired with all current required certifications and screening shown by USA Boxing.

What is Green Level certification?

It is USA Boxing’s entry-level coach education course. It introduces coaching fundamentals, athlete development, core skills and safety.

Why do coaches need SafeSport and a background screen?

Coaches hold authority over athletes, including minors. These requirements support athlete protection and establish clear reporting and conduct standards.

Can I learn coaching at Old School?

Contact the gym and tell us about your experience and goals. Any opportunity to assist is based on the gym’s needs, conduct standards and the status of your USA Boxing requirements.

Requirements can change. Confirm current details on the official USA Boxing Coach Membership page.
